Program Purpose

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Fine Arts and Design, Oil Painting Concentration seeks to produce students with a solid grasp of fundamental techniques, skills, and concepts in oil painting as well as an understanding of art aesthetics, history, theory, and management. The program prepares students for careers in drawing, painting, or advanced studies in related areas.

Educational Objectives

The program aims to:

  1. Demonstrate with proficiency the creation of compositions that successfully use appropriate tools, elements of art and principles of design.
  2. Communicate art technique, history, and theory clearly and concisely.
  3. Critically think about the purpose of making art and art’s influence on culture.
  4. Effectively communicate and present oneself and work in a professional manner by developing and maintaining an online presence.
  5. Students will be able to construct a technically sound painting on multiple substrates and media.

Admissions Requirement

Institutional-wide Admission Criteria

  • Completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Official Transcript: allow for evaluation of academic performance, relevant coursework, and overall readiness for college-level study.
  • Personal Statement: helps reviewers understand the applicant’s motivations and aspirations to pursue the program of study.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Letters of recommendation from teachers, mentors, or professionals familiar with the applicant’s abilities and potential, and additional insights into the applicant’s character, work ethic, and potential for success in the program.

Program-specific Criteria

  • Portfolio Review: Applicants should submit a portfolio, typically includes a selection of the applicant’s 10 best artwork, showcasing their technical skills, artistic vision, creativity, and conceptual depth.

Graduation Requirement

  • The academic requirements for graduation are the successful completion of the curriculum with a grade point average of no less than 2.0.
  • In addition, a graduate must have taken at least 50% of all courses from FTC Northern.
